Description
This is the magnificent library of Celsus in Ephesus, in the central Aegean region of Türkiye. Although the area was inhabited since the Neolithic period, Ephesus is most famous for its Greek and Roman history. Ephesus forms part of the narrative of many great conquerors, including Croesus, Alexander the Great, Antiochus, Mark Antony and Augustus. Ephesian Artemis was worshipped at the nearby Artemision, one of the seven wonders of the world. The library of Celsus dates to the early 2nd century CE, and is thought to have held up to 12,000 scrolls. Above the entrance were four statues representing the virtues of Celsus, Sophia (wisdom), Arete (valour), Ennoia (thoughtfulness) and Episteme (erudition). It is certainly one of the most unique ancient structures in the world, and a must-visit for book-lovers of course.
